Milan Section
Milan, December 7, 2017 - The ANPS "Mario de Benedittis" Milan Section has received the Ambrogino d'oro certificate of civic merit for its ongoing commitment to the community. The Milanese ANPS was recognized for its ongoing commitment to the community in which it operates, from organizing basic computer courses to cultural and recreational activities, from conferences in schools and senior centers on sensitive issues such as bullying to significant volunteer work at the Prefecture, the Office of the Judge for Preliminary Investigations, and the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office. "This important recognition," said President Carmine Abagnale during the award ceremony, "goes not only to the Milan Section, but to the entire ANPS. Our goals and values, throughout Italy, are the same and unite us to the great family of the State Police."
Historical Summary
The National Association of the State Police, originally the National Association of the Public Security Guards, was founded in Rome on September 30, 1968, by several Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and Bodyguards, to foster a strong sense of unity among retired personnel, first, and then with serving personnel, all united by the ideals and values of the Fatherland and the Police, as well as by a revived historical tradition.
It is the only recognized State Police Association and has been under the direct supervision of the Minister of the Interior since its inception. With Decree No. 820 of October 7, 1970, the President of the Republic established it as a non-profit organization, and in 1971 it was registered in the Register of Legal Persons.
ANPS includes active members, including retired and active police officers, as well as sympathizers, supporters, and honorary members—others who share the organization's ideas, goals, and programs. 170 chapters, which represent the core of the organization, operate nationwide; two additional offices are located abroad. Each chapter carries out a series of initiatives for its members and the community in which it operates. These initiatives range from organizing recreational events to patrolling schools and city parks; from providing practical technical lessons on road safety to middle school students and high school students to promote a culture of legality. These initiatives also include initiatives to support the environment and protect artistic heritage; assistance for the elderly; the organization of charitable events; and collaboration with other associations and organizations.
Furthermore, ANPS participates in anniversaries, institutional events, and official commemorations, and organizes conferences on highly topical issues, in collaboration with associations, research, and schools. Several Civil Protection and Volunteer units, duly registered in regional and municipal registers, are part of the ANPS.
The primary purposes of the Association are:
1) Preserve and transmit to the younger generations the historical and cultural heritage of the State Police and keep its traditions and values alive
2) Promote throughout the region, through its central and peripheral branches, all social activities that enhance the image and prestige of the ANPS;
3) to instill in young police officers a sense of belonging, as well as dedication to service and sacrifice, for the protection of citizens and the defense of institutions.
To maintain the bond of mutual solidarity between the police officers of yesterday and today, the Association, in collaboration with the Department of Public Safety, organizes, every three years, a National Rally featuring various promotional activities involving the citizens of the host city, concluding with a parade of armed units of the Police Specialties, and representatives of the ANPS sections, motorcycle, sports, and civil protection groups.
The enthusiasm and unwavering dedication of its members, and their ongoing commitment in every field of social service, have earned the unanimous acclaim and admiring recognition of the country. They have also earned the heartfelt appreciation of the President of the Republic, who, on April 27, 2006, awarded the National Association's flag the Silver Medal of Civil Merit. This prestigious recognition has enriched the already impressive list of honors bestowed upon the State Police for its distinctive work throughout history, and for providing assistance to populations in areas devastated by earthquakes, floods, and other natural disasters.
Finally, the National Association is the custodian of the Police Medal Collection, which displays the highest honors awarded. This, together with the Flag, represents and keeps alive the memory of the many police officers who have sacrificed their lives for their country, both in peace and in war, in service of the institutions, and to safeguard the safety and freedom of citizens.
